ISLAND CARIB 1665 · TODAY’S GARIFUNA · ROOTS · LOSS · REVITALIZATION

We retrieve our language through our language.

A native-speaker-led investigation of what survives, what changed, what was lost, and what may be responsibly revived—especially within the historical men’s Carib register.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR · THE LIVING AUTHORITY BEHIND THE WORK

MARAGAÑ (Shaka) MAGARADA

MARAGAÑ (Shaka) MAGARADA — Author, Engineer, Data Scientist, and Native-Speaker Research Authority · Native Garifuna speaker from Dangriga, Belize

MARAGAÑ (Shaka) MAGARADA — Author, Engineer, Data Scientist, and Native-Speaker Research Authority earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from California State University, San Bernardino, and is pursuing graduate study in Data Science at the University of Colorado Boulder. His work joins living Garifuna knowledge, oral tradition, lexicography, software engineering, artificial intelligence, and evidence-grounded data systems so the Garifuna community can study, teach, recover, and carry its language forward in its own voice.

His author-supplied personal history traces his formation through the healing and matriarchal leadership of Euphemia “Winnie” Antonio; the spiritual lineage of Sarah Gonguez; the musical and cultural inheritance of master drummer Cyril Antonio; and the sovereignty and public leadership of Egbert Higinio. His early Los Angeles community work included cultural-event emceeing, assistance to lexicographer Ruben Reyes, and performance with Libaya Baba as a backup vocalist and player of the garawon.

Biography and lineage are author-supplied autobiographical testimony. They establish authorship and lived formation; they do not replace source evidence, community review, or entry-level linguistic proof.
SCIENTIFIC BOUNDARY

Our voice leads. Complete sentences show the language in use.

Open the sentence-witness research engine: its governing rules, exact corpus gates, sense-first alignments, academic sources, worked investigations, and review boundaries.

  1. 01Living Garifuna first

Native-speaker analysis and attributed community language lead interpretation.

  2. 02Sources remain distinct

Historical text, reader translations, scholarly witnesses, and modern comparisons never collapse into one claim.

  3. 03Generated forms are not words

The earlier v0.5 audit lineage recorded 475,692 generated, expansion-only, or provenance-empty rows. That historical count is not a current public-entry count, and those rows cannot appear here as Garifuna lexemes.

  4. 04Review governs revival

No continuity, loss, men’s-register, or revival statement is certified without community and peer review.
